LARA SHIVERED under a blanket in the guest bedroom while Dexter finished securing the gaping hole in the roof of the library. The glass hadn’t covered a huge space—only about six feet—but it had seemed like more when it had cracked beneath the weight of the wet snow and sleet.

She’d offered to help Dex nail up some boards over the area, but he’d refused on the grounds that he couldn’t take the guilt if the curse hurt her any worse than it already had.Rubbing her fingers over the bandage on her lower back where a chunk of glass had made the deepest scratch, Lara reached for the family history book she’d taken from the library after they’d cleaned up the room. She was eager to help Dex put this curse to rest, whether or not he fully believed in it. He’d seemed almost relieved to know someone was trying to sabotage him, as if that proved there was no century-old negative energy swirling around his life.

Maybe studying the family’s past would help. Smoothing her hands over the worn leather binding for a moment, Lara sensed many hands had held the volume and studied it before her. She cracked open the huge book and the pages fell immediately to a photo of the man she’d seen on the staircase fighting with his mistress.

Dex’s great-grandfather.

“Lara.”

She started at the sound of her name whispered by an unfamiliar voice. A woman’s voice.

After so many years of experience with paranormal phenomenon, Lara wished she wasn’t still so unsettled by the presence of spirits. Tightening the blanket around her shoulders, she peered about the room for signs of any stray energy.

“Yes?” Her own voice came out in a disconcerted rasp, her whole body rebelling the fast-forward changes in her world today after going from the most sublime sex imaginable to abject fear at falling glass and now—this?

“The Brantley men are scoundrels.” The voice gained strength, sounding indignant and impossibly well-bred, like a New Yorker caricature come to life.

“Who are you?” She spoke aloud even though there were schools of thought that suggested conversations with the dead could be carried out mentally.

Lara remained of the opinion that conversing out loud clarified the discussion and kept her focused. Besides, this wasn’t her area of expertise. Chatting with dead people unnerved her. Especially when she could not see them.

“I am a woman scorned. A mistress tossed aside like a bit of old rubbish.” A whisper of cold air blew past Lara’s cheek even though no window had been opened.

She held her shiver in check, recognizing the sign of a full-fledged ghost. She hadn’t wanted to use the word with Dex who seemed to carry such a healthy dose of cynicism about her work anyway. But whatever Lara chatted with now, it wasn’t a mere psychic impression. Tightening her hold on the bedspread, she appreciated the way the feel of the material world kept her grounded.

“I’m sorry.” Lara sensed the spirit’s despair, a pang that resonated deeply within her own heart.
